From November 8th – 10th, our Model Organization of American States (MOAS) program sent students to participate in the Eugene Scassa MOAS competition in Waco, Texas at Baylor University. In MOAS, students use parliamentary debate to address the economic, educational, political, and security issues facing the Americas today. In the competition, our Texas State students received more first place awards than any other university present at the competition. Among the many highlights, one of our teams, Team Ecuador, won Outstanding Delegation, first place overall for a team.
Our students’ spectacular performance has been the culmination of steady and marked improvement in the program from year to year. It is not an overstatement to say that our students have gained a reputation and a respect from their fellow competitors as being one of the top MOAS programs. In addition to the exciting developments in theFall, our MOAS program will send students to participate in the Washington, D.C. Model Organization of American States (WMOAS) from March 26th – 30th 2013. Representing the Republic of Suriname, the students that will participate in the WMOAS are: Rasha Abu-Zeyadeh, Kiley Goff, Josh Heinlein, Chris Hoerster, Cheyenne Krause, Tyler Mahan, Matthew Maldonado, Megan Parrish, David Pope, Sama Sayej, Gabe Schmidt, and Brad Schmidt. I am sure that we will be proud of all the students that participate, as their goal is to represent Texas State in an exemplary manner.
The Department of Political Science would like to thank the College of Liberal Arts for its on-going and generous support of the MOAS program. We would also especially like to acknowledge the Student Service Fee Advisory Committee for the one-time funding of $6,000 in FY13. The support we have received has helped to significantly reduce the cost of the trip for the students. Without this type of support, we would not have been able to undertake this remarkable learning experience!
