From November 4th – 7th, our department sent a delegation of students to participate in the Eugene Scassa Mock Organization of American States (ESMOAS) competition at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. In the competition, our students represented the nations of Argentina, Colombia, Honduras, and Guatemala. Texas State students brought home many awards. The highlights included: Tara Dees winning Distinguished Ambassador (2nd Place Overall for an individual award) and Team Argentina winning the Distinguished Delegation (2nd Overall team award).

Washington, D.C. MOAS: In addition to the exciting development last Fall, our MOAS program sent students to participate in the Washington D.C. Model Organization of American States (WMOAS) from March 21st-26th. We were proud to have Marissa Roman represent Texas State as the Model’s Secretary General, the highest student honor at the event. Representing the Commonwealth of Dominica, the students that participated as delegates in the WMOAS were: Tara Dees, Victoria Kadous, Lauren Stotler, Carly Spangler, Connor Clegg, Kassy Avila, Andrew Homann, Daniela Bustillos, Allie Hackley, Preston Paul, and Caroline Butler. We can be proud of all the students that participated, as they fulfilled their goal of representing Texas State in an exemplary manner.
Southwest Model Arab League: We have also been in the process of diversifying the types of competitions we will be participating in to give our students a greater array of academic experiences. To that end, our students participated in Southwest Model Arab League competition at Texas A&M Commerce from March 30th-April1st. Two of our students, Kassy Avila and Daniella Bustillos came away with Outstanding Delegate awards, a tremendous accomplishment given that this was our first venture outside the MOAS structure.
In keeping with the goal of expanding and diversifying our program, I am proud to announce that we will compete at the Harvard Model UN in the Spring of 2017. This will replace our annual WMOAS trip; however, in doing so, we expect to provide a more competitive, challenging, and academically sound experience for our students.
We would like to thank the Department of Political Science and college of Liberal Arts for their generous support of the MOAS program. Without this support, our students would not be able to experience these wonderful academic events, and achieve the success that they have seen.
