Dr. Ashleen Menchaca-Bagnulo was recently interviewed in an article titled “Latinas Had the Highest Unemployment Rate This Year—and It’s Driving Them to Vote” in Ms. Magazine by Chabeli Carrazana. The article, which highlights the increased turnout in Latina voters due to concern for their families during the COVID-19 pandemic, quotes Dr. Menchaca-Bagnulo on the driving forces of voter participation and draws on her personal experience in her city. She says, “Latina women tend to think about what they need to do to preserve their family. In the past, it’s been hard to see how your vote is something that relates to your family,” “This year it’s become ‘if I don’t vote, my family is in danger.’”
