On Friday, October 30th, Texas State’s Public Administration program hosted Mr. James Earp, the City Manager of Kyle, Texas, for a workshop on “The Essentials of an Effective Interview.” More than thirty students and faculty members attended Mr. Earp’s presentation via Zoom. Following his presentation, attendees tried out the “best practices” he suggested. Some participants stayed late to talk with Mr. Earp and ask him questions.
Mark Lottman, a graduate student interested in public administration, reported that “Before attending the workshop, I had not really considered perspective of and pressures on interviewers. Mr. Earp did a fantastic job explaining the communication barrier between interviewees and interviewers, and how the former often speak optimistically about job opportunities and responsibilities while the latter need to reduce risk to their organizations.”
