On Thursday, Nov. 5, Dr. Longoria presented his latest research on the 2018 migration “crisis” along the south Texas border created by the emergence of caravans from Central America. Within the past year, Dr. Longoria has conducted surveys and interviews with local government officials in south Texas cities to understand how local governments handled the influx of migrants in their cities and what kind of policy approaches are being used to ease the process of moving thousands of people through the state, many of whom have few resources to get to their final destinations across the country.
One grad student, Rex Wyatt, said that Dr. Longoria’s research was interesting because it allows us to understand what is actually happening in local governments in south Texas. Despite still dealing with the challenge of Covid-19, more than 20 people attended the presentation both in-person and via Zoom.
