C.J. Cetina, a senior political science major, testified before the Texas House Redistricting Committee on September 18th. Cetina spoke in favor of designating San Marcos as a community of interest, thus unifying it into one Congressional District. As it stands, San Marcos is divided into two United States Congressional districts, with the dividing line cutting through campus and the square.
Cetina is a Redistricting Fellow with the Campus Vote Project, a non-partisan organization under the Fair Elections Center. The goal of his work with the organization is to empower Texas State students to have a voice in the redistricting process.
Cetina was motivated to testify before the House Redistricting Committee by his conviction that “students at Texas State university… need representatives who listen to [their] voices and look to understand [their] needs.” A redistricting which reflects the role of students in the San Marcos community, he feels, will lead to “students engaging civically and more politicians engaging with students.”
