Inklings Hosts Dr. David Levy to Discuss Public Service

On Wednesday, November 6th, Dr. David Levy spoke to an Inklings gathering about his years in public service. Entitled “Reflections on Public Service: My Years as a Mayor and County Attorney,” his talk explored the culture of government during his years as mayor of Archer City, Texas and county attorney of Archer County. His talk placed particular emphasis on his efforts to foster civility and professionalism.

One attendee observed that “Dr. Levy’s insights about running for public office and his time serving gave me a better understanding of how local government really operates. His first-hand knowledge was helpful and proved insightful to somebody who might be thinking about public service.”

In the spirit of the original Inklings, the Department of Political Science at Texas State University has had gatherings and talks over the course of some twenty years. Inklings talks, reflecting the diverse interests of our Political Science faculty, have addressed a wide variety of subjects in a spirit of fellowship, and civil discussion. The original Inklings consisted of a small group of intellectuals (whose ranks included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis) who met weekly at Oxford University to read aloud and discuss their works. The meetings were characterized by lively exchange of ideas, friendly criticism, and, sometimes, humor.
