The Fall 2017 Political Science Film Series featured 13th, a Netflix Original documentary by director Ava DuVernay, director of Selma (2014). This documentary identifies systemic racism throughout the U.S. justice and legal system. The documentary explores how while the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, forms of slavery still exist deeply embedded within the prison system. The showing took place in Alkek Teaching Theater on November 8th in conjunction with the 2017-2018 Common Experience, “The Search for Justice: Our Response to Crime in the 21st Century.” Approximately 70 students, faculty and members of the community attended. The film series is coordinated by Prof. Rick Henderson.
