Political Science Student at Hispanic Politics Conference

On Friday, October 8th, political science student and Texas State Student Government Senator Serenity de Leon traveled to Miami to participate in the National Student Conference on Hispanic Politics

The conference was sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, in collaboration with the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute and Florida International University. The conference featured keynote panels and breakout sessions from leaders in public policy, government, and the media. Speakers included Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, former US Representative and Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Carlos Curbelo, a former member of Congress; Sabrina Rodriquez, an immigration correspondent for Politico; and Scott Winship, a Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Selected to attend the conference through a competitive process, De Leon commented that she was honored to be chosen to  represent Texas. “During my time there” she continued, “I met Luis Guillermo Solís, the former President of Costa Rica, and the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. The conference gave me a better appreciation of diversity of thought in the world of Hispanic politics and immersed me in unique ideas on public policy. It was a truly inspirational experience.”
